The company started its involvement in the caravan business in 1952 when Mr. J. Smuts approached Jurgens boddies to build 20 break delivery trucks for a local bakery. It was then that Mr Jurgens appointed Clarendon Motors as his first caravan dealer when he started building caravans in the same year. They aggread to a target of two caravans to be sold by Clarendon Motors per year. At the time Clarendon Motors was the local dealer for Morris Motorcars. Over the years to come more and more caravans were sold and in 1968 it was decided to change the company's name to Clarendon Caravans and Camping, and caravans become the main line of business. A former motor mechanic Harry Herholdt became the official salesman and was later joined by Stoney Steenekamp.
A new salesman Gert Scheepers joined the team based in Springs in 1981 and in 1986 Mr Herholdt and Steenekamp bought the company from Mr Smuts who then retired. The new owners of Clarendon were approached by CI to quite the Jurgens agency and join the CI camp. Clarendon Caravans was now the official agent in Springs and Trichardt for Sprite, Wilk and CI Motorhomes. In 1989, Gert Scheepers acquired shares in the company and it was time to open a second branch in Springs.
Sadly Harry died in 1996 and Gert Scheepers became sole owner. In 1997 Caravan Corner in Nigel was incorporated into Clarendon Caravans Springs. In 1999 the trippel francise was granted and Jurgens was back with Clarendon where it started in 1952.
There were many highlights in the history of Clarendon Caravans one of which was a project where CI motorhomes were converted into Mobile Clinics and supplied various Town Councils country wide, also to the Cancer association in Cape Town, the University of Free State in Bloemfontein and Pretoria Technicon. The climaxs of this project was in 1997 when Gert clenched a deal with the Mapumalanga government to deliver 30 of these units to the value of three million rand.
